The Ornamental Torch Ginger

There are hundreds of varieties of ginger , but not all are used in cooking. The torch ginger  belongs to the Zingiberaceae family like the galangal, ginger etc. This is one of my favorite ornamental gingers sometimes called ginger lily. The botanical name of this tall plant is Etlingera Elatior. It grows to a height of 17-20 feet and puts out saucer sized flowers. However when grown in containers they do not grow more than 8-10 feet in height .

These flowers have thick, waxy petals and bright colors. They can be red, pink or orange. They are show stoppers in any garden. People of Sumatra and Bali do use the roots and the buds of these flowers in their cooking. Thai people use the petals in salads.

These plants grow from tubers and can be a perennial in your garden once planted. These plants need 6-8 hours of sun to bloom. When temperatures fall below 50*f the tubers die and do not come back again.  These plants need a higher level of potassium for healthy growth and blooms.
