On our first trip to Bangkok, Thailand I thought the monks were like the Catholic priests who are permanently with the church. The monks are like on a vacation from work to be a monk. It is a way of experiencing the life of a religious person and to follow the rules of the monastery and Buddhism.
I find the monks very kind people and accommodating although I understand that we should not touch them. No handshake, no hug. Their service to the temple is a sacrifice for weeks or even months depending on their vow.
