In the rural areas, they would gather the fronds of a palm tree for making broomsticks. The palm tree can be the coconut tree but the best for the broomstick is the palm tree called Buli. It has longer fronds and stronger sticks. After the leaves are taken off and the sticks remain, that is the time to tie the frond sticks on wooden stick to form the broomstick.
Even with the advent of the blower that makes it easier for the cleaner to sweep the streets, the broomstick is still used in this part of the world. The street sweeper’s uniform is not complete without the dust pan and the broomstick. At least in this digital age, the fronds of the palm is still useful to man.
