Students are poor in reading

In the news lately is the issue that our students are poor in English reading comprehension. That may be the fault of the department of education but the government is not admitting it. They put the blame on the teachers and also on the parents who are negligent in guiding their children, so they say.

My take on the issue is the social media. Students are so engrossed with the internet that they seem to forget about the proper reading. They are good for short reading but for reading a story or an essay, they lose the entire gist. Now what is the connection of social media to that problem? Social media is not much on English and if ever, wrong grammar is prevalent. So maybe that is the crux of the matter.
