The Endless Column is one of the most admirable sculptures of the last century, a work of the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi.
The work, also known as the “Column of gratitude”, was dedicated by Brancusi to the heroes who fell in the First World War in the battles on the banks of the Jiu River.
The Endless Column symbolizes the concept of infinity and the infinite sacrifice of the Romanian soldiers. The Endless Column stacks 15 rhomboidal modules, with a half-unit at the top and bottom, making a total of 16. The incomplete top unit is thought to be the element that expresses the concept of the infinite. All 16 rhomboidal modules accumulate a total height of 29.3 m
This sculpture is part of the Monumental Ensemble of Târgu Jiu, composed of “The Endless Column”, “The Kiss Gate” and “The Table of Silence”.
“This is the message of my Pillar, guarded by the Table and the Gate … To burn like a flame … To turn into lightning by linking heaven with earth.” Constantin Brâncuşi.

A great capture. I wonderful work of art and thank you for sharing,
This is a sculpture of infinity (its title in Romanian is ‘Coloana Infinitului’).
I have admired his work for a long time. I did install Brancusi’s “La Négresse blonde” for an exhibition at SFMOMA. I love your photo – it is sometimes difficult to get a good picture of tall, skinny things.
Thank you, Howard! I’m glad there is at least one person who has heard of this wonderful sculptor! ?
What a perfect capture. Never heard of this, so interesting. Thanks for the share.
An oak version of this sclupture is found in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City..
