Saying No to Plastic Straws

The plastic waste problem is much bigger than many of us thought. In my cblog “How Great is The Plastic Waste Problem?”  I discussed how big the plastic waste problem really is.

A video showed, how the plastic wastes affect the environment and how it kills the fishes and seabirds and other sea animals.

One of the biggest contributors to the great plastic waste problem is the ‘single-use plastic’ name the plastic straw! Millions or even hundreds of millions of this single-use plastic is thrown every day.

Here in the Philippines, plastic straws are used in restaurants, fast-food chains, sari-sari (small neighborhood) stores in serving cold drinks such as bottled soft drinks, shakes and others.

These straws usually end up in the dumpsites or in the ocean. A few are recycled to make other things.

As part of my contribution to lessening the plastic waste problem, I started to stop using plastic straws a couple of weeks ago. Whenever I buy a bottle of coke or other soft drinks, I would tell the vendor that I don’t want to use a straw.

Keeping this in mind, I will also stop buying products that come with plastic straws (juice drinks in tetra-packs, etc…)

  1. I don’t use straws because they have never been comfortable to me, apart from the very few times I get juice in tetra pack box. Single use plastic is a huge problem indeed. Have you used metal straws or other reusable alternatives?
