Our native snack called Ginatan

Ginatan is from the word Gata which means the coconut milk. The name for the snack therefore means food that is cooked in coconut milk. Ginatan used to be the toast of the town before the foreign snacks came. The hamburger and pizza changed the gastronomic landscape here so the native snacks were somehow overshadowed.

The Ginatan is usually cooked during summer when the kids are out of school. They not only eat the Ginatan but also share in the preparation. That means cooking Ginatan is also a way of family bonding. The main ingridients aside from the coconut milk and sugar are taro, sweet potato, banana plantain, jackfruit and ground glutinous rice that is made into small balls. Ginatan is always a favorite in our home.
