Nail biting…

When parents notice that their child is biting their nails, they are mostly scared because they think it is due to negative emotions or some hidden problem. Doctors claim that there are several common reasons why children bite their nails, and that it takes a lot of patience, sometimes with the professional help of a doctor, to get rid of this unpleasant habit. The problem with nail biting most commonly occurs at the age of five, seven or eleven, sometimes in adolescence, and some children will keep this habit well into adulthood. Research shows that 45 to 60 percent of children have a nail-biting habit at some point in their development and that boys and girls at an early age are equally prone to it.With the nail biting weaners should start at a young age as this habit is very difficult to break in the later (adult) period. The first thing you need to do is find out the cause of this unpleasant habit. Observe the child and try to find some pattern when biting his nails. Maybe it only works when it’s tense, or, maybe, when it’s hungry or tired. Once you understand what the cause is, talk to the child about it, give him comfort, understanding and love.To distract the child from this unhealthy habit, never yell at him or punch him when he puts his hands in his mouth. It’s also a good idea to enroll your child in a sport or dance, as research shows that physical activity has the effect of preventing this bad habit.
