My daily picture – Wood nuthatch

Wood nuthatch is a short-tailed bird with a long bill, blue-grey upperparts and a black eye-stripe, I found in Chindia Park. I like to call it the “climber” because it  climbs and descends very easily on the tree trunk.

The nuthatch give a real circus show when it moves up and down the trunk of the trees, going as well upside down, head down or spinning like a twist around the tail. Beautifully colored, with red-brown abdomen, nuthatch are attracted by wooded areas, but also by human settlements surrounded by parks. They make the nests in in tree holes and  narrowing the entrance into the nest with a clay threshold. They feed especially on insects and spiders, and in winter with seeds or even nuts, which put in the cracks of the trees and then breaks them.

It is a vocal bird with a repeated loud dwip call. Its song is a slow whistled with many variants.
