Eggplant is my husband’s favorite vegetable. I never really cared about eggplant until I met my husband. He loved it so much that I learned so many different ways to cook it. Curries, fries, batter coated fries, grilled do anything with them and he loves it. Now, I grow them on my terrace.
Tips for growing eggplants
Aubergines are so easy to grow. I never bother growing them the traditional way. At the end of the season I let one single fruit to go to seed on the plant itself. When it is ripe , yellow and shrinking I take it off the plant cut a slice of it and leave it in a pot. From this thin slice grows a huge number of plants. I select about 10 strong plants from the crowd when they are about 15 cms tall and re-pot them, the rest are given away to my neighbors and friends.
There are a few things to be kept in mind while growing eggplants. These plants can be easily infested with mealy bugs and aphids. It is important to use a ‘natural’ bugs spray once a week regularly.
Eggplants are heavy feeders, so plant them in soil which is rich in organic matter. Feed them every two weeks with worm compost.
Aubergines love direct sunlight for at least 6 hours daily and need to be watered heavily.
These plants do well with pruning, so don’t hesitate to prune them once the season is over . Some plant can produce vegetables for 6-9 months if cared for properly.
Happy growing

I am not a big fan of eggplants even though they are a traditional vegetable here. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is not an easy task, but can be very rewarding.
I didn’t care for it either but there are a few dishes I love to make.
Honestly it isn’t easy to grow some veggies, but you know what you eat and from where it comes.
I have never grown eggplant. I like it in a Bulgarian dish. If you can translate it, it’s easy to prepare. Here is a recipe: https://gourmetfriday.com/kyopoolu/
We make a similar dish here without the peppers, using lemon juice or Greek yogurt.
my father grew the small ones that actually look like eggs!
(he also grew the big ones).
I prefer the small ones as well, they are tastier. I like the white round ones, I guess your father grew them, they look so cute.
just like eggs! yes he grew the small white ones. They really pop in a curry.
But they have kind of thick skins here.
they do, but we cut them up very small and the skin was chewable!
I love eggplants but I cannot get them too often. Lovely flowers in the photo.
Why so? Is it not available all the time?
They are available but I can only get them when I order groceries to be delivered there are no fruit and vegetable stores nearby
Oh I understand now.
A very interesting piece. I love eggplants too (we call them aubergines here in the UK), and I never realised they had such beautiful flowers, before seeing your photo above.
I won’t\ blame you, the flowers kind of hide behind the leaves so they are not noticed so much. Thanks for stopping by , I appreciate this very much.
