Friday in Black & White – Passers-by my street

It’s Friday ! Time for my Friday in Black & White post. For today I chose a photo I took from my kitchen window. It’s part of my project: “Passer-by my street”.

Nothing special. Only two women walking in the middle of the street … and one of them smokes. So what?Smoking is an increasingly common vice today. Many people smoke because they are nervous, others smoke because they are happy and some  because they are bored. Each has its own reasons. But I can not understand why a woman  smokes in the street! I find it totally inappropriate.

But who am I to judge people?

  • Have you ever smoked on the street?

    • Yes
    • No
    • I do not smoke at all!

  1. My mother used to smoke, but she would never smoke in the street. That rule only applied to women! This kind of thing is arbitrary and random, depending on learned social rules.
I am surprised to read that “smoking is an increasingly common vice today”, because it is becoming less and less popular here, especially since the ban on smoking in public confined spaces came into force a few hears ago.

  2. I have been taught since I was a child not to smoke what my late brother in law called “Cancer sticks” because it leads to lung cancer. I remember seeing a sign on a front door that read “Please do not smoke. We would rather die of natural causes” in the neighborhood that was on the east side of the 17th Street Canal in New Orleans.
