Favorite annuals in the garden – Snapdragons

Snapdragons are available in just about any color except blue. I started these from seed indoors and transplanted them in spring. They have a pleasant fragrance and flowers right through to fall.

Snapdragons belong to the Antirrhinum family of dragon flowers. These flowers are so named because of their resemblance to a dragon’s face. The open and close their “mouth” when squeezed laterally. In zones 5 to 10 they are perennials but are grown as annuals in zones 1 to 5.

If you want to grow these awesome flowers, you can start them from seed indoors as I did with great results and transplant outdoors after the last frost in spring. Aside from adding color and style to your garden, they are a great source of nectar for the bumblebee. While you may be told that they like full sun, my snapdragons do great in part sun, part shady areas.

  1. We don’t have a lot of space for gardening but there are people in my neighborhood who grow snapdragons. I got fascinated by them when I was a kid. My mother used to grow them.
