Earning my keep

The title is the reply of the sidewalk vendor to me when I asked why she is still selling fruits and vegetables when the virus is dangerous. She said that she doesn’t want to depend on the government. Yes, the government people give relief goods but we cannot live on 2 kilos of rice and 3 small cans of sardines. Well, the vendor has a point because our town mayor had given relief goods only once and it’s been a  month that our town is under lockdown.

Some people have the common sense to take up the responsibility. That is admirable of the sidewalk vendor because most of the poor families here just rely on the small pension that the government is giving them. That pension is for political purposes so come election time those in power now are assured of winning the votes.
