We have a neighbor who buys ladybugs and butterflies. She always includes school children to help with the release. It has become a big tradition in our area. She spends some time teaching the children about the benefits of having them.
She talks a lot about the wings of the butterfly. Research estimates that these small creatures flap their wings an average of 20 times a second!
Even if you very carefully hold the butterfly gently by the wings, you will find little scales if you look at your fingers. Most call those scales butterfly dust,
What are the colors all about with those butterfly wings? Color can help attract a mate, hide a butterfly from predators, and even look like it would not be a tasty thing to eat.
There seems to be a purpose for everything in nature.
