it might be possible to dial back a bit

The dark background gives it more power.
dark backgrounds push light figures to the foreground
You have a very good point about the background pushing the character forward.
is he supposed to be a good guy?
yes, but he doesn’t look like it here
maybe because of his fierce look.
that and the fact that you can’t see his eyes
Maybe it is just me but I would like to see a helmet on his head.
he will have hair and some form of headgear, but not until I resolve his breastplate
The lighting is just right on this one.
