The ancient fortress of Cape St. Atanas in Byala, Varna region, Bulgaria

The ancient fortress of Cape St. Atanas in Byala, Varna region, Bulgaria.

How do you feel the idea of going down the streets of an ancient city, looking at a winery, a bath and a church for more than 1500 years, all situated on the edge of a cliff on the very beach?

Open for visitors in May 2014, a late antique fortress at Cape St Atanas in Byala is different from most of the castles you’ve seen.

During the excavations, three ancient wineries, a public bath, ceramic pottery furnishings, a church complex, entire streets and various buildings were discovered.

The most impressive will be the way this ancient harbor town, once hidden half a meter below ground, has been restored.

Authentic stone slabs and buildings are complemented by painted scenes from the old life of the place – to get an idea of the days and feasts of our ancient ancestors.
