During our January, 1994 trip to Honolulu, Hawaii my cousin Heidi and I went the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. We were deeply moved by what we saw and heard there. The visit inspired me to write this poem:
Bright Sunny Morning (U.S.S. Arizona Memorial)
Bright Sunny Morning
No one would think
Death would be stalking boys
Ready to sink
Hopes, dreams, and lives
Put to the test
Arizona’s fine sailors,
Laid to their rest.
Bright sunny morning
Aloha my friend
No one deserved this
Miserable end.
Paradise shattered
War clouds and hate
Too many young men
Found out too late.
Bright sunny morning
Look to the skies
Dream of a new day
Peaceful sunrise.
Very powerful and moving poem!
Thanks for the feedback Ellie! 🙂
