Avala, mountain Belgrade

Avala is a mountain that is 17 km southeast of Belgrade, on the road Belgrade – Kragujevac. The altitude of the Avala is 511 meters, which is 11 meters as a mountain and makes it the lowest mountain in central Serbia, among the mountains that descend to Belgrade. Avala is well forested with wild trees, and partly under the pine forest. The name “avala” is of oriental origin and comes from the word “havala”, which means “sightseeing”, that is, the place or object that has a good aspect and dominates the environment.

From the top of this fortified city on Avala, there was a wide view of the whole area to the Danube, which was of great use to the Turks in the long-term planning of the siege of Belgrade, which finally took place in 1521. Unfortunately, the ruins of the town of Žrnov were uninhabited in 1934 and a Monument to the Unknown Hero, a famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, was erected there. The mineral avalite was named after Avala, where it was found. After the First World War, the local population found Avala a number of graves of Serbian soldiers killed in the First World War, including the grave of an unknown Serbian soldier. In 1922 a peasant monument was erected by a number of surrounding villages. Later, the State Committee for the Elevation of the Monument decided that a representative monument be lifted at the top of Avala. The project for the Monument to Avali was made by the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, in the form of a mausoleum with huge caries at the entrance, representing women in folk costumes from all over Yugoslavia.

On Avala there is a TV tower, which is one of the symbols of Belgrade, demolished in NATO bombing in 1999. The new TV tower was built with a huge donation campaign among the people of Serbia, initiated by Belgrade artists, in order to build a new TV tower, at the site of the former one. The Tower of Avala is one of the most beautiful masterpieces of architecture, the tower has two lifts and a restaurant on the 119th meter, or a gazebo at 122 meters of height. Avala is a pleasant and interesting tourist place and a favorite picnic area of Belgrade and visitors of Belgrade.
