Only a few minutes walk from there is the very top of the mountain and the Monument to an unknown hero.The memorial complex, the work of the famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, was opened on Vidovdan on June 28, 1938. and is located at the place where it was once the medieval town of Zrnov.This city once represented a significant strategic location.The Slovenian name of the fortress Turks have changed to Haval which meant “the tump that dominates the environment.” That is how the name Avala was created.

Avala is a mountain of volcanic origin.Even today, it is abundant with mineral wealth that have been dug out from ancient times.For the needs of the Roman Empire,they were digging minerals of lead, silver, iron.An entirely new mineral was discovered here, which was named avalit.

According to one of the stories on Avala, the legendary Argonauts came in search of the Golden Fleece.The Argonauts, under the command of Jason on the Argo ship, sailed the Istar (Danube) river to the great desert Laurion (Deliblatska peščara) and Mount Angurion (Avala) in search of a golden fleece.

On Avala, a monument to Soviet war veterans is dedicated to the Soviet delegation of officials led by Marshal Birjuzov, who took part in the liberation of Belgrade and who were tragically died in Avala in 1964 in a plane crash.
Another historical monument is located at the foot of Avala, in the village of Jajinci. The Jajinci memorial park dedicated 80,000 detainees to the Banjica camp, which the Germans shot during the Second World War.

For those who want to spend a day in the nature and organize a barbecue it is possible at the marked places that are foreseen for this.There are two mountain huts in Avala – Mitrovic’s home and Carapic’s brest, as well as Hotel Avala.
I don’t remember a blue mountain being in the story of Jason and the Argonauts, but I might’ve read a bad translation. Also, it’s been a while…

The legend mentions the Istrian river and Mount Angurion ..the assumption is that this is Avala.
The ancient Greeks did seem to know about places that were quite far away
