According to the existing documentation it was in this place that the oldest temple of the Azores was erected – the “Ermida Nossa Senhora dos Anjos” , built in the 15th century. The primitive hermitage, built in wood in 1439, was rebuilt in stone masonry, about three decades later and rectified in 1893. In front of the hermitage stands a belfry in stone masonry with the ceiling finished in a back arc.
It was in “Anjos” that Christopher Columbus’s crew landed in February 1493 on his return from the Americas.
I share some photos of the place once. I leave you the challenge of looking for what the place is like today. Fantastic!
