One of the things I consider when it comes to technology is the fragility of the system I am considering. In most cases, the fragility of any system is always the information. Why do I think that? Well first off it isn’t just me thinking that, every single company, government agency and non-profit spends time and money building governance, security, and management solutions around the information they have, create and store. Information is both the value and the risk any organization experiences.
But it is the point of failure, plus it is fragile in the sense that no matter what happens there is no value if you lose organizational information. I am not, by the way talking about the free release of information to the public domain, I am talking about the loss of organizational information. There is value in releasing or open sourcing information. That is significant and can be greater than the value of the information as property. There isn’t however, the value in losing information.
Considering this, and considering the many regulations and impacts of information retention policies I realize that information and the procession of information is, in fact, the fragile reality many organizations live in. We are bound to the information we create. We are bound to the information we store. That information makes us unique so losing it is a huge risk for our organization. In fact, the fragility of information causes organizations to consider carefully what happens next. I have a potential solution for this that I am going to share in the next couple of days. But first, it is always critical to lay out the problem. The most fragile thing any organization has is the information they can’t afford to lose.
