Washington Nationals hire Dave Martinez as their new manager

The Washington Nationals have hired former Chicago Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez as the next manager this week.

Martinez had been a bench coach with the Tampa Bay Rays from 1998-2014 and the Chicago Cubs from 2015-2017. There were stories that when current Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon left the Rays to manage the Cubs before the start of the 2015 Major League Baseball season, Martinez would succeed Maddon as the Rays manager before Kevin Cash succeeded Maddon as the manager of the Rays.

Martinez has a three year contract to manage the Washington Nationals. The management of the Nationals is under fire for not renewing the contract of Dusty Baker at the end of the 2017 Major League Baseball season after the Nationals were not able to get out of the first round of the National League playoffs in the two years that Baker managed the team.

In my view Martinez has paid his dues as a coach working under Joe Maddon during his time with the Rays and Cubs which qualifies him to manage the Nationals which will enter the 2018 Major League Baseball season as the defending the National League East Division.
