During the NCAA Women’s College World Series (WCWS) super regional softball game between the Texas Longhorns and the Alabama Crimson Tide, Longhorns pitcher Miranda Elish took an unexpected shot to the face on a dead call. The Alabama hitter was already called out for having her foot outside of the batter’s box.
At the time, the runner on first was trying to reach second when the umpires waved the call as being dead. However, everyone saw or heard the umpires instead of the Texas catcher, who attempted to throw out the runner at second. However, the ball hit Elish directly in the face. Elish was taken to the hospital. Texas won the game 7-5. The two teams will play again on Saturday evening in order to determine who will advance to the final eight of the Women’s College World Series.
The risk is great with any sport. Very sad.
Roll Tide! Have a great weekend.
