2019 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 picks

The UEFA Champions League is back after a two-month hiatus with eight star-studded match-ups.  This competition has not seen this much parity in quite some time as a few past powerhouses have regained their glory.  Here are my picks for who will advance past the knockout round of 16.

Manchester United vs PSG.  Have you realized that Manchester United has not lost a game since they switched coaches?  Now, Paris-St. Germain will have a huge problem dealing with a motivated Paul Pogba.  Plus, Neymar is also out for both matches.  Pick:  Manchester United.

Roma vs Porto.  Although Porto has been under the radar this season, they have the type of team that can give Roma’s porous defense plenty of trouble in this match-up.  Pick:  FC Porto.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund.  Injuries to Tottenham’s two key players, Harry Kane and Dele Alli, will allow for Dortmund to display more offensive firepower in both matches.  Pick:  Borussia Dortmund.

Ajax vs Real Madrid.  Real Madrid is looking to win its fourth consecutive Champions League title, but they will have to get past a rejuvenated Ajax club.  Real Madrid has played their best games of the season last week with a tie against Barcelona and a win against Atletico Madrid.  That momentum should carry Real Madrid through to the quarterfinals.  Pick:  Real Madrid.

Lyon vs Barcelona.  Lyon has a chance because they do counterattack well, but Barcelona has looked like the best team of the world this season.  Pick:  Barcelona.

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich.  Bayern appears to be in a transition season as their mainstays are past their prime without enough younger players filling the void.  Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp will now be able to go against Bayern with a full squad instead of when he was coaching at Dortmund.  Pick:  Liverpool.

Schalke 04 vs Manchester City.  The lack of depth on Schalke’s team has been costly this season because they have looked mediocre for quite some time.  Pick:  Manchester City.

Atletico Madrid vs Juventus.  Atletico’s defense has not been as strong as it has been over the past few years.  Juventus should be able to take advantage of Atletico’s defense with their quick striking ability.  Pick:  Juventus.

    • A good time to start is Tuesday at 3 PM EST on TNT. Soccer has no commercials during both halves of play, which is why soccer was not pushed very much by TV executives, but that has changed over the past few years.
