For the second time this season, the #1 ranked team in college basketball has been upset by a team that was given absolutely no chance to win by pundits before the game was played. Yesterday evening at Coach K Court, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski watched his team lose to Stephen F. Austin 85-83 in overtime even though the Blue Devils were favored by 27.5 points. This upset is the biggest upset in the past 15 years in regards to point spread between two Division I college basketball teams.
To put this upset in an even more absurd perspective, the last time Duke lost a non-conference game at home was in 2000. Duke had beaten Kansas this season, while the Lumberjacks had lost to Rutgers, a university that has not been to the Final Four over the past 4 decades.
Please take a look at the video because the way that Stephen F. Austin won was crazy as well. With eight seconds to go with the score tied at 83, Duke PG Tre Jones drove to the basket and attempted to bounce pass the ball to an open teammate. However, the ball was mishandled and tipped out to Lumberjacks Nathan Bain. Bain ran down the court and put in a layup right before the buzzer to secure the victory.
To make this upset even more inspirational, his family’s home was severely damaged almost three months ago when Hurricane Dorian ravaged the Bahamas.
Down to the buzzer tends to make things exciting.
Yes, it does. Plus, this upset was rather unexpected.
