The muddy volcanoes Paclele Mari in Berca, Buzau County, have become a frequented tourist destination and probably the most famous geological monument in Romania.
Muddy volcanoes are conical mounds created at the surface of the earth by eruption of natural gas that come from depths of about 3,000 meters to the surface of the earth through a layer of clayey soil in combination with the groundwater.
The eruption of such volcano forms the cones at the surface by drying the mud in contact with the air.
