This is a common bird who follows gardeners in NZ and digs into the garden.
There was a certain Blackbird who used to watch Mum did her banana peel into the garden. As soon as she left the Blackbird dug it up again. So Mum would bury it again and the Blackbird would dig it up again.
Mum was quite amused by this bird. I often find them following me when I pull out weeds. Its as if they say, do gardening so that I can dig up more bugs to eat.
Its a wonderful bird. The males are black like this one and the females are brown. The fledglings are brown and speckled.
I believe the ancestors of this bird were from England. Its not a native of NZ. It does no harm to the environment. Actually improves it.
I love these birds, they have a nice voice and sing so beautiful!
Thanks Lapka, they do, and these birds pinch the cat food sometimes.
Really? Hope, you cat forgives them 🙂
Too many cats in our neighbour hood even though I like cats, they kill our precious native birds and are responsible to contribute to many native birds extinction.
I believe all cats in NZ should be de sexed .
Sorry to hear that 🙁 I love cats and I love birds and rodents too! I dream that they all could be friends and live in peace……. 🙂
We have blackbirds as well. Everywhere! I guess the entire world has the blackbirds.
Thanks so much Carol.
You are very welcome.
They are beautiful birds, I love them! Unfortunately, some people here don’t like them because they eat the fruits in the gardens. Wonderful photo!
Thanks Ellie, those blackbirds also eat our fruit as well. I always talk to the birds and ask them to leave us some fruit too. Sometimes they do listen.
