Anthropology – 4

Whether an Anthropologist is  studying University Students in California or hunters in Kenya, there is always a dichotomy between what people know they are supposed to say/do/believe and what they really would say, do and believe.

In a conversations to their ‘own’  they might admit their personal truth, but to ‘outsiders’  often the best words to describe their discussion  is persiflage or deception.

If you can find the duality you will gain the clearest insight into what the people really believe and why they hide it..

Many persons who seem to be ‘fanatics’  do not actually believe in their ’cause’. They talk and behave to convince themselves and give a particular image to those they fear.

Only a clear eyed anthropologist can see this dichotomy and carefully map it.
