Sam came out of Court in a complete daze. How could this happen?
He had filed a divorce against Roberta, claiming adultery. But the Court didn’t believe it. They believed Roberta. They believed he was the one having an affair.
Well, he was, but how could an affair he started after he left Roberta count?
Further, his small salary was being dunned, to prevent him not paying child support. At the end of the week he got 1/3rd less than he was paid. One Third! And the job did not pay well.
When he reached home, he was still dazed. He had a date with Sellie that evening, but didn’t feel like himself so cancelled. He just wanted to curl up in a corner and figure all this out.
Sam was not himself the next day, he was quieter, less presumptuous. He did his work and didn’t talk very much. He went home and ate the dinner his mother made for him. He watched television. He went to bed.
Selena, assuming that Sam had moved on, went on a date with another man. She liked the fact he had his own place, and more money. She liked the fact he didn’t brag about who he was, what he had done. Sam had been a kind of place holder in her life which she didn’t need any more.
When Sam finally called her, five days after the divorce, she told him she had met someone else, their relationship was over. She had moved on.
Sam couldn’t believe this.
He looked in the mirror. He didn’t see the Great I Am any more. He saw an average guy who was no better than anyone else. An average guy, in a nothing job, whose nothing ex-wife was getting 1/3rd of his pay to support their two children, whom he had no custody over and would have to make arrangements to see.
He wondered if he hadn’t stepped into the Twilight Zone, but it was actually, reality.
