With a trip to Dallas Texas coming up, I wanted to get as much information on the city that I can. Information such as its tourist attractions, food, and um, the chances of encountering a scorpion of all things. With that being said, I asked thirteen Quora users what is the possibility of encountering a scorpion in the Dallas Texas area and these are the responses I got.
Lawrence Eads, former Retired at Taylor Publishing Company (1962-2000) – “Growing up in Austin I encountered a lot of scorpions in my first 25 years. After moving to the Dallas area some 55+ years ago I’ve seen one or two. Possibly because I no longer run around barefoot outdoors, which is an excellent way to find one.”
Scott Dismukes, former Head Instructor and Chief Bottle Washer (1998-2018) – “When we moved into our first 2 houses i north central Texas (both new construction), there were farm fields torn up to build the houses. We had scorpions in both early on. The third house we bought (also new construction) was in an established neighborhood. I think the only reason that lot was still available was it was #13. Unlucky number to many. We saw no scorpions in that house as the neighbors had already been using pesticides on their yards, and the original scorpion habitat was long gone. We lived in 3 houses in that town, over a span of 40 years. Now that we are out in the country, scorpions are pretty routine. They are small and stay away from the house – I see them in the fields and sometimes in the tractor shed. To my knowledge no one – not even the dogs – have ever been stung by one.”
Richard Butler, former Police Sergeant at Dallas Police Department (1982-2011) – “You have a very good chance. We lived in a stone house for a year off Ferguson Road in the 1960s when I was growing up. We had lots of problems with scorpions. I now live in rural Hunt County about 30 miles from Dallas. We occasionally see small scorpions here.”
Wesley Archuleta, Senior Operations Analyst at Vision works (2013-present) – “You have a pretty good chance of encountering a scorpion in the Dallas Texas area. Especially in areas where construction is occurring as that disturbs their natural habitat and the enter homes seeking to escape. Fortunately, however the stings from Texas scorpions produce only moderate reactions in most people because the poison has little effect on the nervous system.”
Bo Baker, Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitut (1978-present) – “They love wood piles. yes, Scorpions are quite prevalent in all of Texas. Although, they are less frequently encountered in the highly populated areas due mostly to pest control poisons. But, if you live near a wooded area, it would be no surprise to run into one.”
Mikie Stasso, Seeker of truth an stuff at AAB Remediation Consultants (1963-present) – “I think the possibility would be high. Anything i know, or have learned about scorpions tells me that Texas is THE ideal place to be if you are a scorpion…”
Paula Darling Tanner, Reliability Analyst at Energy Transfer Partners (2004-present) – “If you’re in the city, probably not too great. If you venture into the outdoors, then very possible. Here’s the deal… scorpion stings in Texas are the equivalent of a bee sting. Nothing to panic about. Take an antihistamine and move along.”
John P. Scallan, former SW Engineer, Corporate Engineering Mgr. at Motorola (1986-2009) – “The chances are pretty good. all of Texas is in the range of scorpions in the US. They like dark and warm places. Check your shoes before you put them on in the morning.”
Nikki Pere, lives in Dallas, TX – “Well I’ve lived in Dallas for almost 5 and a half years. I’ve never encountered a scorpion here. (Knock wood that will not be changing anytime soon).”
Tom Jacob, lives in Texas – “Except for two years, I have lived in the Dallas area since 1977 and have never seen a scorpion, I know that they are around, but I’ve never heard anyone consider them a real problem.”
Stephen M Hatcher, lives in Dallas, TX – “I have lived in the Dallas area all my life and have never seen a scorpion. Austin has them everywhere. Dallas, not so much. I think you’ll be okay.”
Mike Donnell, former 25 Years Managing and Owning Restaurants – “In urban and established suburban Dallas, they are very rare — out in the growing ‘burbs and rural areas they can be found. I have seen one here in 20 years (living in developed suburbs) and that was in a graveyard.”
Damon Howze, Cosmetologist (1973-present) – “Very small.”

I have a friend who has a ranch outside of Dallas (about 40 miles). He has lots of them! Scorpions everywhere.
I bet those beautiful trails out there are loaded with them.
they mostly stay off trails, but they are pretty prevalent.
Might get squished by runners I imagine, but free game on those slow hikers, and campers. I wouldn’t want to imagine what its like to have one creep in a tent
metal bottom running shoes may be required~
After running in the area, I kept doing scorpion spot checks, lol. Even did it in the hotel while lounging around. My next trip to Dallas I plan to tour the northeast side.
my first strip I stayed by Love Field. My last trip I was actually in Fort Worth. I took my walking gear – I was going to walk in the mornings before teaching.
It was 103 degrees at 7 am.
I probably would have done more if I flown into Love Field which would have put me more near downtown. I am looking into flying back out in March possibly. Hope to add a Texas race on my resume whether trail or road race.
i have often enjoyed visiting Texas. My friend has a ranch outside of Dallas. Always fun to go be a cowboy for a day!
I can get use to traveling to Texas during our winter months in Illinois
I had considered going back out to do Irving Marathon, but with Coronavirus I had to kill that. Some races are pushing there dates back, so I am curious if Irving Marathon does it.
If I can get a grasp of the transportation system I plan to get lots of pictures of downtown. The outline of the city is freaking gorgeous
i spent a lot of time teaching classes in Dallas.
Oh wow. So you have been around
1.8 million lifetime miles flown.
Sheesh! I would like to take advantage of earning more miles.
i only earn miles now on vacations with the family or my wife.
its a lot easier!
I keep forgetting to register for the airlines I fly out of even though they send me emails to register. I’d like to get another credit card that pertains solely to gaining mileage based off of my usage of the card
i switched to Amex rewards years ago, I can push rewards to Amazon, Airlines and hotels.
I see. I sometimes add a lot. And when I do the files are big.
I dont mind switching blogs because they have all brought new energy. I love the themes I typically go with and I never want change anything.
i can understand that. i stayed away from pictures because I have so many copies of them anyway.
Be on the lookout for ‘Foodie Confession’, lol. I’m so geeked to visit Whataburger. Whataburger is known to Texas.
you will have a blast! So glad you decided to stay!
I did hit delete, but the site is so flawed that it won’t delete it. I’m sure I would of regretted it because I have so many informative articles that I put a lot of time into. I guess its good that it didn’t delete it. I did lose a few articles, but I will resubmit them.
i am so happy you stayed. The behavior of the few should never drive us away!
Its frustrating when you have someone with clear issues that just won’t go away. I do like the idea of keeping my profile blocked because it limits access which is mostly because of that user. I could care less about points. All I want to do is post articles about what I love.
i understand that – blocking a user on Virily prevents the user from sending you private messages it doesn’t block your profile for anyone else.
Sorry about all of this.
Seems so useless because I could easily ignore a private message. But anywho it needs to be fixed if they want more users in the future. Not sure if Virily will just continue to have ‘us’ as the primary users or if they want to add additional writers in the upcoming years.
you raise a very interesting point. I worry about Virily continuing more for the negativity and the lack of views.
We have three camps of writers right now. that concerns me.
I am curious how they will, or if they do promote to get more writers. They found me off of a tweet about looking for a blog site. I imagine that none wants to visit Virily because there is actually nothing interesting here.
Or better yet, very few insightful. I do participate every now and then with the challenges, but it is not the main thing I share because it is useless when it comes to gaining outside viewers. I, and I’m sure others won’t view that because it comes across as spam, especially with the ads. Hell, but luckily we have no ads, so it just looks like a random site.
I think the reality of Virily today, is that no they are not adding writers.
we have too many people focused on what is wrong with the site. We need to fix the views externally!
And as for me, I do not care about what’s wrong with it. Just want to share my content. I can give two f*cks about a poll not working or anything else. We are basically living rent free on a website that is requiring much from us ; )
that is the right attitude, it has to be a partnership us and them together.
My WordPress doesn’t give payments, and in order for me to do certain things on it I have to pay. I cannot complain when I’m living rent free; posting a ton of pictures with every post and not being charged for the used space.
i have two free wordpress sites today!
I use them to back up my blogs (my Niume lesson).
I will be creating a new WordPress soon because I am about out of space.
Out of space? i have more than 10 years of blogs on my WordPress site and have never run out of space…
Do you add a lot of pictures in your word press blog?
normally 1 on the wander project but I used to do 3. then I do occasionally add one on my technical blog.
What prompted you to look for this information in the first place?
I have a trip coming up to Texas and of course I will be out doing things. Scorpions, as well as snakes are known for being around Texas, so I wanted to get as much information on where they may be at.
