What is wrong with feminism?

The problem with feminism in India is similar to the problems with feminism across the globe. When feminists are calling to bring about equality of opportunity- I am all for it. But when women start asking for equality of outcome- that becomes a problem.

Think of it in this way- You have two children who are genetically different(meaning they aren’t identical twins). Now, if you are a strict parent who imposes rigid rules and beats them to discipline, then they would turn out to be ditto bar their biological differences- the outcome would be precluded by style of parenting. But if you are a more friendly parent and give them freedom- their embedded differences in them will manifest and they will become two unique individuals. Now, extend this to a country and assume the government to be the parent. If the government provides a oppressive environment, we will see the tendencies of the two genders to be skewed but if we let them be- then their manifestations will not be manipulated.

Consider the Scandinavian countries. The Scandinavian countries are closest to providing both men and women equal opportunities- the result of it was a 20:1 women to men ratio in nursing and 1:20 women to men ratio in engineering. Now some pseudo-feminists won’t be happy with this inconvenient but true statistics. They will talk about pay gap but they won’t say that there are many other reasons for the pay gap besides gender. Some of the other factors being-

  • Women are more agreeable than men i.e. men are more aggressive than women- being more aggressive and non-agreeable works at both ends of spectrum. It helps men to be successful in a corporation as well to end up in a prison. The pseudo-feminists will talk about the less number of women CEO’s and would demand equality of outcome but would they also want equality of outcome for there to be more women prisoners?
  • Men are more willing to move for work, while women are dealt with a bad hand given they have to bear a child which puts a significant brake on their career.
  • Men are more likely to do more dangerous work. Of course there will be a few ‘outlier’ women who end up doing more masculine jobs but again that is a small fraction. Remember, there are certain discrimination’s that are sensible and required- discrimination based on competence is necessary. And it is very evident that feminine traits and masculine traits manifest differently and this is by nature. And affects that are artificial/man-made should be removed(make it as natural as possible).

There are many disciplines where women master and dominate. Women are better at jobs that are based on human care. Will the pseudo-feminists say that women are oppressing men out of this sector and call for equality of outcome?

Though, this problem exists in India too. It is more of a first world problem and tends to get buried by the other third world problems our country faces today. In India, women still need to get equality in opportunity- this will only be possible when we establish laws and policies which facilitate safety of the women as well as equal opportunity. Reserved seats in college won’t matter if they are going to be oppressed to not go to college. The men in our country are still very much an oppressor and there is no denying that.

So long as equality of opportunity is the definition of ‘feminism’ and not ‘equality of outcome’, I am a feminist.

P.S. – My views are very much aligned with that of clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, while I use many of the examples he uses in his lectures and interviews in the answer above, I still recommend each one of the readers to listen to his lectures on YouTube.

Edit 1- Everyone wants to be a victim because that gives one a moral high-ground. I have literally seen and met girls who belong to educated families and study in few of the best colleges in India but still pretend to be oppressed. And this self-victimization is not limited to women, it holds for men too. Therefore, self-victimization is another thing I despise about ‘feminism’ and as an extension, about ‘humanity’.

Thanks for reading. Have a nice.

  1. I repeat everyone of us at some point in life used the victim card- I now realize the consequences of self-victimization and refrain from it but I too am guilty of self-victimization for something my grandparents have suffered, at some early stage in my life.

Maybe I should have given references/citations. I will remember that in future but I refuse to concede that it is an overstatement.

  2. Wow! I find this generalized statement appalling. ” Everyone wants to be a victim because that gives one a moral high-ground.” Using a term like “everyone” in connection with such an overstatement is simply inaccurate and appalling.

    Interesting view and extreme.

Thanks for adding to the Virily discussion.
