How to Sharpen Your Knife in the Correct Way

A sharp knife will cut through food or items much easier than a blunt one and makes your cooking faster. If you are cutting vegetables, it will also produce a neatly cut stock that is pleasant to the sight. So, if you want to avoid the hindrance of a dull knife, you should get your knife sharpened and there is an easy and correct way of getting this done.

You can get this done by using a whetstone, which is a nicely granule stone used for sharpening knives. You can easily purchase them on Amazon, or at a hardware store close to you.

How to Sharpen Your Knife Using the Whetstone

Sharpening your knife using a whetstone takes a little practice, however, it is not difficult to learn and you can get the hang of it in no time. Follow these steps to get it done.

Place a napkin on your table top or any firm surface to be used and place your whetstone on this. You should have the rough side of your whetstone facing up as this will be the first part to be used.

Get a light brush and a small quantity of mineral oil and gently brush at the top of the whetstone to lubricate it. You should lubricate your stone before use as it makes the entire process of sharpening much easier.

Pick an angle to be used and start the sharpening process by grinding the blade back and forth on this angle. You should use a smaller angle as using a wilder one will produce a dull blade that will mostly likely be nicked in some parts.

Continue sharpening using moderate pressure and making sure to maintain the angle selected. Run it back and forth a few times and then flip the whetstone over to the smooth side and repeat the process.
