Day 3 of Spring Garden Show 2018: Growing Strawberries

At 10 am, I went to one of the seminar rooms for a seminar on growing strawberries in containers. The PH should be between 5.5 to 6.5. Orange County has alkaline soil. It might not come out right here. It is best to use clay ceramic pot with alkaline soil. Use pine needles for mulch to keep of slugs, snails, and other pests. The pots should be placed in a part sun location.

  1. You can do the PH test in your yard by using distilled water with soil sample from your yard. Then, solidify the soil with the needed nutrients so that your strawberries will grow normal, healthy, and sweet.
  2. Microrising is when fungus attaches to the plant’s roots. It is used for turf grass. Strawberries also have microrising. It is good for drought tolerant plants.
  3. Granular fertilizer takes a while to get down into the soil. Make 2-inch holes into the soil with a chopstick before watering your plant.
  4. If you bury the crown, then the strawberry plant will die.
  5. The soil needs good drainage so to still hold water.
  6. Humus is like lava rock
  7. peat moss
  8. alfalfa meal has natural growth hormone
  9. seaweed and sea kelp has natural hormones. The plant should be dry. When it is light colored, it needs water.

At noon, I stopped by Sur La Table to sample cappuccino from their machines. Then, I ate some snacks that I brought with me from home, before I went walking around inside the mall. I decided to check out a cooking demonstration at 1 pm. Chef Ross Pangilinan demonstrated some Filipino dishes from his restaurant, MixMix Kitchen Bar. I will post the recipes later because I plan to veganize or vegetarianize the recipes.
