When to plan curtains for the interior, how to combine it, what the curtains are needed for large window, which are fashionable?
Tip for how to choose curtains
Step 1 – Plan the curtains before the finishing
It is advisable to think about curtains at the very beginning of the interior design stage, which should take place before the interior decoration of the dwelling. Because, if you need, for example, to hide the curtain rails in the ceiling, it’s only possible to do it until the finish. It is worth remembering that there should be no wires in the place of the curtains fastening.
When fitted stretch ceilings, curtains cannot be hung on them, so if the curtains are needed, its fixing must be provided in niches behind the stretch ceilings. From the relation of curtains with the ceiling depends the whole interior design very much. At the design stage, the function of the curtains is also highlighted – whether they are decorative, whether they will be protecting from the sunshine, or will hide from the extraneous sights, it eventually becomes clear whether they will be needed at all.
Curtains just look like a dangling piece of fabric. There are, in fact, a lot of details that can be taken into account only having the experience and knowledge. You need to know how the curtain and the track will look in the room with low and high ceilings, what and how to choose, to accurately measure the size of the windows, set the distance from the window sill, the radiator, accurately predict how much and where the fabric is needed.
Step 2 – The shape or type of curtains
The variety of curtains consists of several shapes, the main ones being classical curtains, austrietes or other type of window dressing. When designing the interior, it is needed to decide about the shape of curtains. True, the shape, if the fixing point is unchanged, can be adjusted during the installation of the interior, it is not very complicated.
The shape of the curtains is essentially determined by the nature of the interior. Classical curtains will surely be better for classical interior, roman shades or blinds, screens will look more modern in modern style.
When choosing the type of curtains, the window space should be kept in mind. In the modern dwellings, the living room and kitchen space are combined, and curtain fabrics are also combined. However, if the terrace window is covered with classic curtains, then in the kitchen area, especially if the window in front of the sink they are not very comfortable, so the romantic or austrietes of the same fabric are usually chosen.
Step 3 – Curtain fabric
Curtain fabrics are divided into two large groups – day curtains and night. True, there are semi-translucent, semi-dense or semi-transparent fabrics from which the curtains can be both for day and night, but in this case they will not fully accomplish both functions. The selection of curtain fabrics also depends on the side where is the window, or on the need for sunscreen.
The density of daily curtains depends on your desire to see or disassociate the environment. A few years ago, fabulous tulle fabrics with rich notes were fashionable, now such a trend disappears, and the denser, integral, beautifully falling tulle takes over. Day curtains essentially carry only a decorative function.
Night curtain fabrics can be natural and synthetic or blended. The resistance of natural fibers is enhanced by synthetic additives. The blended fabrics are easier to clean and they fall down more beautifully. Natural fabrics need more caring, they tend to crease, and they need dry cleaning. Linen or cotton perfectly protects the sun, but shines, especially in darker colors. Natural silk creates luxuries, but is not suitable for sunlight. The sun is damaging this tissue. Synthetic fibers are much more resilient.
There is a special fabrics completely sun block – blackout. It is a three-layers fabric with a black layer as a middle layer. They are resistant to sunlight, do not fade, ideally suited for the south side windows. Well-known manufacturers give these fabrics a guarantee of fading and they are not necessarily just dark colors, as many imagine.
The fabrics of classic night curtains are usually heavy, falling with deep folds.
If on the sunny side you want bright colored curtains from tissues nonresistant to sunlight, then they are sewn with a lining. The lining curtains become heavier, it fall nicely. But it’s worth remembering that bright fabrics of fancy pattern are more suitable for spacious rooms. The bright fabric can make a small room even smaller.
Step 4 – The harmony of curtains and interior
The suitability of the fabric depends on the interior, the lighting, the color of the walls and many other details that are even hard to name. Very often it seems that the fabric changes the color in the home – the environmental impact is so high. There is no template on how and with whom to combine colors and patterns of curtains. There starts the creative space: some combine curtains with the walls, others – with the color of the floor, the third with furniture or the whole texture. The others curtains emphasize as an exclusive interior element.
Step 5 – Curtain hanging methods
There are several standard curtain hanging methods that depend on interior decoration, curtain shape, and fabric. Classics are cornice; there are several types of them, as well as a few tracks and its various variants that have arisen several decades ago. The way to hang curtains is chosen at the stage of interior design. The curtain that runs down from the ceiling expands the height of the room and the cornice over the window lowers the room. The decision is always dictated by the situation.
The curtain movement can be controlled manually, with different stripes, cords, and their remote control is possible also, but it needs to be designed and installed before finishing.
