Lezmor 27 of 78

They take their seats as Tol, and I carve the goose and serve the meal.

Getting serious, Violoi looks over. “What do you truly do with your time Eren?”

“I like to study, learning new things.”

Eating a bite, she nods once. Chewing, then swallowing. “I hear much about your subjects you study. Perhaps I could have you do some studying for me?”

I look her in the eyes. “I only study for my own entertainment, Ambassador. I hear you’re a member of various organizations. Is this true? I entertain studying some of them I believe.”

Swallowing another bite, she smiles. “I tend to mentor, and I’m a benefactor to many organizations. So perhaps I do support an organization you study. Do you entertain bards?”

I shake my head, offering, “no, I observe and listen to bards though. Have you anything interesting for me to listen to?”

“Not really, nothing that you’d care to safely listen too. I hear some performances are deadly to listen in on … without protection.”

Getting the message clearly, I nod, offering, “that is interesting to know.”

She smiles. “I’d be sad to hear you had an accident listening to the wrong performances. Or, I’d be horrified if Esmelda got injured because of being at the wrong performance.”

Giving her a small frown, I nod, saying, “I agree and understand, Ambassador. Perhaps there is a name of the performance we should avoid?”

She shrugs. “I can’t think of one right now. I could count on my fingers the organizations that should be avoided though.”

I broach the subject of Havar’s instructions. “Violoi, if I may? Do you own the Red Rundle?”

Eyes widening slightly, face flushing slightly redder, she hesitates. Then looking me in my eyes, she replies, “indeed I do. How do you know about that property?”

Winking once knowingly, I raise the corners of my lips in a slight smile. “Connections, my friend. We’d like to rent unit number five if we could. We’re offering four-hundred a month.”

Violoi sits slightly stiffer, looking at her plate. Mouth working a bit in flux, slightly open then closed. She looks up, looking me in the eyes, with a grim straight-lipped expression. “If you know about the Red Rundle, you know the price is six-hundred. You accept?”

I wink once and offer my hand. “Do we need to sign contracts?”

“I’ll send it to you. What name is it to be legally registered to?”

Coughing once, I hesitate. Then red-faced, I answer timidly, “Eren Mallet … for a six-month contract.”

She continues to lift her fork of roast goose as she says, “don’t abuse this. No offences using the facility, Eren. You know it’s one sector that security doesn’t record in the city, right? If I hear you caused trouble, you will be responsible to me personally … I extract heavy penalties for real … and perceived disrespect. The entire contract fee payment is due on Trondel 1 of 78 … upon the signing.”

As we finish our meal, each of us greedily devouring a piece of the pie.

I say, “thank you for stopping in to our home, Ambassador Violoi. Sad the Trump couldn’t be here too.”

“The Trump? Never heard of them before. Sounds like someone who may be interesting to know. Unfortunately, I think I won’t be returning here unless I have business to tend too.” She rises to leave.

Es and I also stand to escort Violoi back to the front door. We walk to the front door to send off the wonderous ship’s captain who became our system’s ambassador to alien civilizations back in 68. A woman who just delivered veiled threats to us without identifying her true identity.

Opening the door for her, I humbly bow, stating, “until our next meeting, Ambassador Violoi.”

She nods. “Yes!” And then she’s gone, as I watch her drive away in her grey, electric, elite armoured Mozar sedan.

Tol points to my desktop monitor after I close the front door, and I enter my living area. I observe that the three red warning lights are brightly lit.

Violoi was armed and performing surveillance while here.
