Zé Povinho “is one of the most well-known characters created by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. He is the portrait of the Portuguese people amplifying all their defects and virtues. Created over a hundred years ago, Ze continues to be our contemporary.

Zé Povinho  was assuming the personality of the people, but also the criticisms of the political system and its protagonists. Regimes have passed and criticisms have taken on new contours, even surpassing the life of its author, with “Povinho” re-creating itself in the hands of new authors and creators.
