Orthodox Church and its believers celebrate the memory of the deaths of 40 Martyrs of the Sevastia who died in 320 for Christ’s faith on March 22. It is celebrated in the temples of the Serbian Orthodox Church and in the homes of young couples, because the victims were young, and that day is connected with the ancient custom of gift giving young married couples, those who were married in the previous year.
This is a symbol of the faithfulness of husband and wife because the Sevastil young men were faithful to Christ and that this faith and love must not come into temptation. To remember on them, on this day, 40 cookies are made. Women get up early, bake cookies and cover them with honey. Cakes serve the guests who bring presents on that day.

It would be good that you give us a recipe 🙂
I just wrote the recipe .. in a comment above you.You can make cookies. They are simple and tasty.
It’s seems very easy 🙂 Thank you 🙂 I will make them for sure .
I never thought as martrydom as being sweet, but…
As these young fellows believed and died for Christ … so young couples should be loyal to each other. The honey is poured over the cake so that their marital life would be sweet and beautiful.
I’ve really never understood the connection between death and romance. Is it one of those “the bud consumed by insects dies evergreen” kinda things?
We continue the customs of our great-grandfathers, and pass on to our descendants. That’s how it is. Tradition has been prolonged, without much philosophizing why this is so ..
Yeah, good point. I should probably just stop overanalyzing it…
How wonderful to read about this tradition and I love honey biscuits. Similar I am sure.
Well done! Nice post!
