Blog: My first substance abuse screening as intern

Last week I screened a young lady in her mid-thirties who has a substance abuse problem. She had mentioned that she had started drinking and has used cocaine ever since the age of 16 years old. What was heartbreaking to me was hearing her emotions as she explained her story, along with why she wanted to enter treatment which was because of her fiance being borderline ready to leave her due to her usage. The red flag with this client was that she had relapsed years ago after the passing of a family member. I am quite positive that I will have more encounters and stories to share, but this screening was something similar to a scenario that my professor would give me in class.
