365 Day Photo Challenge Day: 17 Last Light

Today it was simply the quality of light that attracted me. It was the last bit of the electric hour and it lit up the front lawn behind the plum tree. I noticed the light that colored the branches and painted them with a cool cyan blue.

The image of the lake was taken just as the sun was beginning to descend. Before the electric hour, much like the noon hour, the sun burns out all the colors in the sky and the landscape. It is just before the angle corrects and lights everything in the landscape with a wonderful richness of colors.

I was desperate for a feeling of the season as Christmas eve was quickly approaching. I decided to go to the mall, I needed a moment of silence and clarity. I brought my camera along with the intention of capturing something that said Christmas to me.

I’m still working on the Christmas feeling but instead of forcing the issue, it occurred to me that light is the main illusive goal photographers seek. I decided maybe it’s not the greens and reds, packages and late running around shopping, maybe it is the simplest and most beautiful gift of a light in this season.

A light that makes a fireplace cozy against the cold. A light that shows us what is most important and perhaps I captured the very essence of Christmas. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

  1. I completely agree with you. Christmas is different for everyone, and that is ok.
The light, the feeling, those are more important than gifts. They are a gift.
    Merry Christmas!
