Bayer AG has announced that they are looking to branch out even further into the food market. After acquiring Monsanto last year, Bayer is now the top player in the genetic modified organism (GMO) game. However, complaints have been rendered against Monsanto due to GMO’s being resistant to glyphosate.
Glyphosate is one of the active ingredients in the weed killer known as Roundup. The crops are modified so that the herbicide does not destroy the crops. However, the glyphosate remains in the crops, such as rice, corn, and soybeans.
Glyphosate has been shown to cause cancer with over 18,000 cases being litigated in the USA and in Australia. Now, Bayer wants to use the same genetic technology with imitation meat. Meat alternatives like veggie burgers have been gaining traction over the past few years. Now, Bayer wants to use the GMO crops doused in glyphosate to make burgers, sausages, and ground beef. Monsanto, don’t touch my meat!
I wasn’t going to eat it, even without the glyphosate…
I’ve tried veggie burgers and black bean burgers and they are surprisingly good. I don’t need Monsanto and Bayer messing up another product.
if you say so. I am sticking to beef. still waiting on the synthetic meat…
Crazy to see how this will all turn out.
I know that they better not touch my meat as the title implies. They will have the meat tasting like the Cheerios they cover in glyphosate.
They are just pushing the envelope way too far for my taste. They need to back off on the use of glyphosate.
However, this plan will gain more traction because China is no longer buying crops from farmers, so the extra crops will have to go somewhere.
