The importance of supplements

There are foods that heal containing nutrients that are good for us.  Sadly foods also have side effects. I have some age related eye issues. I have to increase my consumption of foods that are rich in carotenoids. I searched and found spinach to be rich in this nutrient.  There are other foods as well such as egg yolks.

In my search I also found a supplement that is a combination of several foods that contain carotenoids. Rather than have spinach every day which I do not think I can manage I have decided to go for this supplement after consulting my doctor.  Swallowing a capsule is far better than eating foods having that particular nutrient on a daily basis.

It is not always possible to find foods that contain the kind of nutrients we are searching for, year-round. That’s why sometimes, despite your best efforts to eat a balanced diet, you may be falling short of the recommended daily amount of certain nutrients. Therefore, the best way to achieve a good nutritional profile is by taking dietary supplements. You can visit online stores like SuperSmart.com to buy the best food supplements on the market today!

  1. I agree that supplements have their place, but in general I think it is better if we can get what we need from a varied diet. In the case you describe, of course, the supplements provide the ideal solution 🙂

    • I am more than convinced we cannot possibly get food round the clock that promises nutrients we are in search of. Take for example spinach. We do not eat it in the rainy weather. Spinach is rich in carotenoids and is recommended for eye health. Egg yolks too are recommended but one needs to take care of cholesterol as one needs to take five or six to get the carotenoids needed for eye health. I can go on and on. Tell me what foods do you recommend that give you 10 mg of carotenoids every single day and that too those not having side effects?

      • I come from the position of understanding that we humans have evolved with the ability to survive, and even thrive, on what is naturally available to us. I’m not sure whether you’re saying that you specifically, or everyone in general, has a daily requirement of 10 mg of carotenoids, but since they are plentiful in many everyday foods such as carrots, squash, sweet potatoes etc. which are available year-round, I have no worries about it. But of course if you have a specific requirement for more than a normal quantity of any micro-nutrient, then supplements have got to be the answer.

        • I have an eye issue and I need a daily dose of 10 mg plus of carotenoids. To get this from food will be a tough call.

I agree with you that food is our saviour and in there we get our nutrients. I do not depend on supplements alone but I believe in them and take a few.
