There was curiosity we observed when both our pets Preiti and Gamma were seen watching with interest while our maid was busy weeding.
Both Preiti and Gamma are no more but they always mingled with workers and spent time with them. This was a common scene here. Preiti and Gamma were friends and were always seen together, playing and strolling together.
All our pets cats, dogs and chickens always got on well after the initial adjustment. It was a joy watching them mingle together

Dogs do react when they miss their master or friend.
Yes, it appears the dog was sad because there was no sign on cat that it has been killed by the dog or another animal.
If the dog had killed it surely you would have seen signs earlier about its behaviour with the cat.
