Crassula Capitella Campfire – My succulent collection

Crassula campfire is one of the most colorful plants in my garden. It starts out green like any normal plant but as it matures the color changes to orange and a fiery red. However when you grow it away from direct sunlight it remains green all through.  This plant constantly changes color through the different seasons. I love it in late winter when the leaves turn almost pink and sometimes with blushes of peach.

Crasulla campfire is very easy to grow from leaves and cuttings. This plant is an attractive home to mealy bugs which hide between the thick layers of leaves and kills the plant. It is also prone to fungal infection. Watering always needs to be done from below, by placing a saucer of water under the container. Watering from above leads to rotting and fungal attack.

A quick way to save the plant when you notice rotting is to remove the plant from soil, remove leaves from areas where rot occurs and let it dry in the shade for a a week or more before attempting to plant it again. Over watering is the biggest enemy of this stunning succulent.

In this picture you can see two of the same plants in different shades of red. The taller one is getting into a growth spurt and shades of peach and green are showing up. In every stage this succulent remains attractive and colorful provided it receives at least a few hours of sunlight everyday.
