My daily picture – Today we celebrate Boboteaza (The baptism of Jesus Christ)

Today the Romanians celebrate “Boboteaza” (Baptism). Theologically called Epiphany,  the feast recalls the time when Jesus Christ, at the age of 30, was baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan River.

On this day, the Orthodox Churches perform “The Great Sanctification of the Water”. Believers believe that this water has a special power because it  is sanctified by a double invocation of the Holy Spirit.  They will drink this water every morning for 8 days, pentru că cifra opt simbolizează veșnicia.

I took this photo during ” The Great Sanctification of the Water”service at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Targoviste

  1. In Bulgaria, men jump into the cold winter water of the sea or river to catch a cross, which is thrown by the priest. It’s believed that the man who catches it, will be in a good health during the whole year. Happy Boboteaza!
