When you stop and think about down hill skiing you realize there is plenty of opportunity to have safety issues. You are plowing through snow down a mountain on two sticks and two poles hoping for the best. The truth is with the right gear there are very few serious accidents. Only 2-3 skiers out of every thousand experience an injury each day.
Having the right equipment and skiing inbounds is key to staying accident free and have an enjoyable day of skiing. Some resorts are now requiring helmets for every skier. In my area they are provided at no charge. It makes good sense to me.
