No Such Thing!

Say it’s not so. One of my favorite animals are black panthers. I just read there is no such thing. It simply cannot be. I must learn more.

Animals that are normally referred to as black panthers are either a jaguar or a leopard. If you catch teh black cat in just the right sunlight you might catch a glimpse of a spot. Apparently, when they are completely shaved (I assume research was done on deceased animals) there are always some spots that can be identified.

Currently there are no known jaguars living in the wild in the United States. There are plenty of panthers where I live and they are all a light brownish color.

  1. You are right…. Black Panther is the most common leopard (Panthera pardus) or sometimes jaguar (Panthera onca), whose fur is black instead of, as usual with these animals, golden yellow streaked with black rosettes. In appropriate lighting conditions can discern markings on the fur.
