Moderation

Moderation is such an important tool to use and somehow it seems like an almost forgotten word. Defined as being within reasonable limits; not excessive or extreme seems like something that is simply practical. Now it seems like moderation is an actual virtue many do not possess.

I was reading studies on screen time and young children. One of the things I found concerning is what parents had to say about the issue. The parents that were being interviewed has children from 3 to 6 years old. They were concerned that if their children didn’t have a tablet and a phone they would be behind when they started school. I was shocked. Not all things on phones and tablets are bad. There are some wonderful educational apps, shows and different ways for children to learn.  As long as it is used in moderation and for the right purposes. These are not babysitters.

There are some real things to be concerned about. According to Dr. Aric Sigman, an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of Britain’s Royal Society of Medicine, unintentionally very small children get hooked on tablets and smartphone cause permanent damage to their still-developing brains. Many studies link extended exposure to electronic media to delayed cognitive development.

We can help even if we don’t have children. We can volunteer at the school to spend time playing. You would be surprised how children really don’t know how to play on a playground.

What do you think?

  1. I think schools should take social media out of schools, have P.E. and allow children to be children. I do not think any child should have a phone at school, ever.
