Of all the Romanian customs, the one who came to identify with the Christmas celebration is “COLINDUL”. On Christmas Eve, a lot of children go to the homes of people and sing carols. If the host opens them, children receive nuts, pretzels, apples, or money.
Another Christmas tradition is the Goat Dance. Dance is performed by a goat-masked lad and dressed with a sheepskin on the back. The goat and her companions walk from house to house, dancing to everybody’s door.
Walking with the Goat usually lasts from Christmas to New Year. The lyrics and the game refer to the idea of fertilization as a cosmic transformation. During the game, the goat dances, consuming vital energies, dying and rebirth, symbolizing the ritual regeneration and the continuity of life.
Today, the goat and her companions came to my street and enjoyed us with their dance.
Merry Christmas!
