The adenium obesium is a very popular house plant in Asia. It belongs to the dogbane family and is native to the tropics and subtropical regions and Africa.
The plant is popular because of its large caudex or trunk that makes it appear like a bonsai. It is evergreen though it may lose all its leaves due to very high or low temperatures. This is a sun loving plant and in season produces an abundance of blooms.
There are thousands of cultivars as no one prefers the five petal version anymore. These cultivars are usually grafted on to the parent plant and sometimes it is popular to have a few different colors on a single plant. Grafting an adenium is quite easy, but one needs to take precautions against fungal infections.
It is hard to kill these plants , but over watering is its biggest enemy. The plant shows no signs of root rot externally, but when you touch the caudex it just collapses. This is one great plant to grow outdoors where it is always sunny and in drought prone regions. Adeniums can go without water for weeks as they store water in their fat trunks and roots.
