Sremski Karlovci(Serbia) – the kiss of the west and the east

Baroque town at the foot of Fruška gora, on the Danube, Sremski Karlovci is a place where magic bells sound like in Florence, as in fairy tales.

Here you will be welcomed by five bell towers, the roofs under which the local population rests, curved streets and hills under vineyards.The center of culture and spirituality of the Serbs in Hungary, the Sion of Yugoslav thought and the first bridge that connects Orthodoxy and Latin education of the West – the prominent figures of our people lived in Sremski Karlovci, where significant historical moments were recorded.

Karlovci was first mentioned in history for the first time in 1308 as a fortress  the Karom. In the time of the Great Vienna War (1683-1699) and after the First Great Emigration of the Serbs, the Srem Karlovci became the heir to the Peja Patriarchate. A peace treaty was also signed here and the Grand Vienna War ended. Srem Karlovci began printing pages of European and world history.

From 1521 and the next 160 years Karlovci were under the siege of Turkey.In 1726, the first high school was opened (Russian teachers Emanuel Kozachinski and Maksim Suvorov were lecturers). In 1734, the first theater performance of the Serbs was performed in the courtyard of the school.In 1791, the first Serbian gymnasium was established in Sremski Karlovci, and in 1794, theology (in the Orthodox world the oldest after the Kiev Spiritual Academy).All the more important buildings were raised by the end of the XIX century, and the Srem Karlovci get today’s authentic appearance.

During the 19th century Karlovci were home to famous painters, writers, philosophers. In them, the May Assembly was held (during the Revolution of 1848-1849), an autonomous Serbian Vojvodina was proclaimed, while the Metropolitanate was elevated to the rank of the Patriarchate. Today, Sremski Karlovci is a municipality with about 9000 inhabitants, a slumberous town that has a specific status.
